Overview

From minimally invasive spine surgery to treatment for neuromuscular disorders to sports medicine, the physicians at Cohen Children’s provide a wide range of clinical expertise in pediatric orthopaedics.

Advances in technology and breakthroughs in research have led to a better understanding of the complexities of childhood orthopaedic and spinal disorders and the ability to treat them more successfully. Our Billie and George Ross Center for Advanced Pediatric Orthopaedics and Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery is the pre-eminent center for the management of pediatric orthopaedic and spinal disorders, is the only pediatric institution on the East Coast that offers minimally invasive scoliosis surgery, and is one of a few utilizing the magnetically controlled MAGEC rod to gradually correct scoliosis and allow growth in young children.

We also use EOS imagery, a Nobel Prize-winning technology that minimizes radiation exposure to our patients.

Our team of board-certified, fellowship-trained surgeons specializes in the treatment of orthopaedic conditions in children and young adults. Our hospital, Cohen Children’s Medical Center, is one of the nation’s top 50 hospitals in pediatric orthopaedics (U.S. News and World Report 2016) and the only children’s hospital in New York state with Magnet recognition – the highest honor for nursing excellence.

Because our patients come to our center from around the globe, we are dedicated to interacting with and treating everyone in culturally sensitive and appropriate ways. And we have offices throughout Long Island as well as Manhattan and the Bronx for easy access to follow-up care.

Clinical expertise

Our surgeons are fellowship trained and vastly experienced in pediatric orthopaedics. They are world renowned in subspecialties including spine, sports medicine, hip disorders, neuromuscular disorders (cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Rett syndrome and Marfans), and deformities like clubfoot and knock knees. And because our children’s hospital is a level I trauma center, we have unmatched capabilities in childhood and adolescent fractures.

As a leading pediatric orthopaedic center, we have a dedicated team of anesthesiologists, pain specialists, neurologists, nurses and technicians ensuring the highest level of care, safety and accuracy in orthopaedic surgery. Our nurses are Magnet certified, which is the highest recognition for nursing. We are proud to be the only Magnet certified children’s hospital in New York. We have a wonderful and dedicated team of child life specialists and social workers who are available 24/7 to assist families and help them navigate the treatment course. Our clinics host onsite orthotists for same day bracing and customized orthotics. We also have weekly onsite wheelchair clinics for children with special needs.

In addition, we partner with the Ronald McDonald House to ensure that our patients and their families who travel from great distances have a comfortable place to stay, free of charge, during the course of their treatment.
